The home side dominated for much of the game, but England finished strongly and were rewarded when Kane slammed an 88th-minute penalty past Manuel Neuer.

Pickford kept England in the game with fine saves from Thomas Muller and Timo Werner before the introduction of Jack Grealish gave England some belated attacking impetus.

Despite Kane’s equaliser, England stay bottom of their Nations League group. Their next game is at home to Italy on Saturday, a repeat of last year’s European Championship final.

Kimmich and Gundogan were masterful when it came to controlling the flow of the game. The Three Lions have plenty of gifted players, but badly need a player or two with those specific gifts.
