'Humiliated' Putin snubbed by Turkish leader in front of TV cameras
Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey ignored Vladimir Putin Wednesday during a conference in Iran, leaving him fidgeting in front of the cameras.
For the first time since he authorised the assault of Ukraine back in February, the Russian president was having face-to-face conversations with his closest ally in Tehran on Tuesday.
He was forced to wait for a nerve-wracking 48 seconds in front of the world's media, though, since Erdogan was late for a picture opportunity that involved shaking hands.
According to Joyce Karam, a senior journalist for The National in the United Arab Emirates, Putin looking "frazzled" in front of the cameras demonstrated "how much has changed after Ukraine."
The Russian president can be seen appearing uncomfortable in the footage, which appears to have been taken by Turkey's official news agency Anadolu and has close-ups of his face.
He can be seen appearing unhappy as he shifts from one foot to the other and looks about the room.
Later, Erdogan walks into the room and Putin greets him.
This event occurred before the two presidents were scheduled to meet to discuss opening up Ukrainian grain shipments to the Black Sea, which have been blocked and are contributing to global food shortages.
This was their meeting since Russia invaded Ukraine in February.
Regarding the video, a few Twitter users made jokes likening Putin's predicament to being "stood up on a date" or "waiting for one's spouse".
