Digvesh Rathi’s Stellar Bowling Performance Overshadows Controversial Celebrations in IPL 2025

Emerging Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) spinner Digvesh Rathi continues to impress in IPL 2025, captivating audiences with his exceptional bowling prowess. While his unique “notebook” celebration has drawn scrutiny and penalties from the IPL governing body, his on-field performances remain a highlight of the tournament. In LSG’s recent victory against the Mumbai Indians (MI), Rathi’s economical spell of 1 for 21 in four overs played a crucial role in defending their challenging total of 203. His overall tournament economy rate stands at an impressive 7.62, accompanied by six wickets in four matches, solidifying his position as a key asset for the team.

Rathi, a self-proclaimed admirer of Sunil Narine, models his approach after the West Indian spinner. “Sunil Narine’s bowling inspired my passion for the sport,” Rathi revealed after receiving the Player of the Match award. “I strive for an aggressive style, focused on taking wickets while maintaining composure under pressure, just like him.” This influence is evident in Rathi’s tactical approach, consistently delivering a good length. A statistical breakdown reveals that 80 of his 96 deliveries this season have landed on a good length or just short, effectively stifling the opposition’s scoring opportunities. Against MI, 19 such deliveries yielded only 95 runs, showcasing his precision and control. His deceptive carrom ball, which accounted for Naman Dhir’s wicket, further highlights his expanding repertoire.

LSG head coach Justin Langer praised Rathi’s unwavering dedication, stating, “His commitment to bowling is extraordinary. He’d bowl for 16 hours a day if he could. He practices everywhere – at breakfast, in the shower, even in the hotel corridor. His passion is undeniable, and it’s translating into tangible results on the field.” However, Rathi’s exuberant celebrations have also garnered attention, albeit for the wrong reasons. Following his “notebook” celebration against the Punjab Kings, which involved physical contact with Priyansh Arya, he received a fine. A similar incident occurred after the MI game, resulting in another fine despite the absence of physical contact. With three demerit points accumulated, another infraction will lead to a one-match suspension.

Despite the controversy, Rathi’s teammates have rallied behind him, emphasizing his value to the team. Shardul Thakur commented, “We need players like Rathi – fearless and expressive. He consistently delivers for us, and his passion is infectious.” The upcoming match against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Tuesday presents a unique challenge for Rathi, as he will face his idol, Sunil Narine. Langer acknowledged the anticipation surrounding this encounter, remarking, “It will be fascinating to watch him bowl against Narine. He has a bright future ahead of him.” As Rathi continues to make his mark on the IPL, the cricketing world eagerly awaits his next performance, anticipating further displays of his burgeoning talent.
