Durham Sign South African Pacer Codi Yusuf to Bolster Injury-Hit Bowling Attack
Durham have moved swiftly to address a significant injury crisis within their bowling ranks by securing the services of South African fast bowler, Codi Yusuf. The 27-year-old joins the club for six rounds of the County Championship and the group stages of the Vitality Blast, providing much-needed cover amidst a spate of injuries to key pace bowlers.
Durham currently has a lengthy injury list, with Brydon Carse, Sam Conners, Paul Coughlin, Daniel Hogg, Luke Robinson, Stanley McAlindon, and James Minto all sidelined. Adding to their woes, South African international David Bedingham suffered a fractured toe during their second-round County Championship match against Warwickshire. While Bedingham’s injury is not expected to be long-term, with a potential return slated for early May against Hampshire, it opened up an overseas player slot, allowing Durham to bring in Yusuf alongside Australian pacer Brendan Doggett.
Yusuf’s arrival comes at a crucial juncture for Durham, who are looking to maintain momentum in the County Championship. He will make his debut for the club against Worcestershire on Friday. Although yet to represent South Africa at the international level, Yusuf boasts an impressive first-class record. Since his debut in 2019, he has captured 88 wickets at an average of 29.14. His recent form is particularly noteworthy, having enjoyed his most prolific domestic season to date with the Lions, claiming 26 wickets in seven matches. In T20 cricket, he has 36 wickets at an average of 29.66 and has also featured for the Paarl Royals in the SA20 league, showcasing his experience in the shorter format.
